Solar and batteries in Parramatta
Parramatta has many townhouses, apartment buildings and older heritage streets as well as detached homes. Solar here is often as much about approvals and roof space as about the panels.
Small roofs and shared roofs
Compared with the outer suburbs, Parramatta has a higher share of townhouses, villas and apartment buildings. For those, the questions are different:
- Townhouses and villas: the roof may be small, shared, or owned by a strata scheme. Check your strata by-laws and talk to the committee before you ask for a quote. Our strata and commercial roofs guide sets out who needs to approve what.
- Apartment buildings: solar on the common roof can offset common-area power (lifts, lighting, pumps, car parks). It doesn't automatically feed individual apartments. For a building with an embedded network or shared metering, the set-up has to be designed around that.
- Detached homes in suburbs such as Northmead, Toongabbie, Wentworthville, Dundas and Ermington: typically the usual rooftop solar and battery job, sized from your bills.

Heritage areas
Parts of Parramatta, including some of the older areas near the centre such as Harris Park, are heritage listed or in heritage conservation areas. In NSW, rooftop solar can often be installed as exempt development, but for a heritage item or conservation area the planning rules are stricter: panels generally can't be visible from the road at the front of the property, and can't be fixed to a roof or wall facing the primary road. State heritage-listed places generally can't use the exempt route at all. The NSW Planning Portal has the detail, and you can check your property on its Spatial Viewer. Which network are you on?
Parramatta is in Endeavour Energy's area (Endeavour lists the Parramatta council area). Parts of the surrounding suburbs are on other networks, so the council name isn't a guarantee. Your electricity bill names your network distributor, and the AER's who is your distributor page can help. It matters because the distributor approves the connection and sets the inverter and export limits.
Businesses, clinics and offices
Parramatta has a large number of offices, clinics, light industrial premises and retail sites, including those around Rydalmere and the health and education precincts. The usual question is who controls the roof. If you lease, ask us about the landlord approval and the lease length, because a PPA or a purchase is easier to justify with a longer tenure. Can I put solar on my townhouse in Parramatta?
Often, but a strata scheme usually controls the roof, even for a townhouse. You'll need the owners corporation's approval first. We can give you the technical detail the committee will ask for.
My house is in a heritage conservation area. Can I still get solar?
Often yes, with panels placed on roof faces that can't be seen from the street. For some properties, council approval is needed. Check the property on the NSW Planning Portal, then talk to us.
Are all Parramatta addresses on the Endeavour network?
Most are, but not necessarily every address near a council boundary. Check your bill or the AER distributor page.
Does solar on a strata roof power my apartment?
Not directly, unless the building is set up for it. Solar on a common roof normally offsets the building's shared power costs. Metering options are covered in our strata guide.
